Welcome to C.A.T.A.L.Y.S.T. (Children and Adults Together Achieving Leadership, Inspiration, Success and Trust.) Global Youth Initiatives, Inc. a 501c3 organization is dedicated to inspiring children to greatness in our city, country, and around the world. We accomplish this by creating and implementing effective youth programs. One program is our C.A.T.A.L.Y.S.T. Mentoring Program located in Volusia County, Florida.
Our mentoring program is in its fourth year of operation. To date, we have mentored more than 360 children in Volusia County. Currently, of the county’s 92 schools nearly 85% are designated title 1 and 76% of our children are coming from single female head of households. These are two staggering statistics. Our program mobilizes adults who are professionals, business owners, managers and supervisors to mentor 1:1 children for 30-60 minutes a week. The mentors start mentoring the child in elementary school and continue until the child graduates from high school. We believe that by building a strong relationship with the child early in their lives, it is easier to keep them focused on and engaged with school as they move into middle school and high school.Mentoring is an effective tool for building E.Q. (Emotional Quotient as opposed to the I. Q.) which is the inner-workings of a human being. That is what a child is, a developing little human being not an entity that spits out numbers, facts and takes exams. Fredrick Douglas said, “that it is easier to build a strong child than to repair a broken man.” Mentoring is known for enhancing self-esteem, confidence, communication, conflict resolution and academics. It has been proven that children who are mentored are less likely to bully, to take drugs/alcohol, to be in gangs or to have a teen pregnancies. And mentored children are most likely to graduate from high school! We believe that it takes a village to raise a child and we are that village. Also, we believe that schools should be the leveling the ground for disparities and safe zones. When we meet with the children in school it sends the message to the child and the other children that school is important. Call Felicia at (386) 216-4289 for more information.
One third of our mentees are Hispanic, African-American and Caucasian. Our mentors reflect the same racial and ethnic mix as the children we serve. The children are selected by the teachers, counselors, parents and even some students request to be mentored. Permission slips must be signed by the parents and Volusia County School provides the background check. The program provides the mentors on-going training and support, social activities, materials, games and trips.
We are currently serving seventeen schools: eight elementary, five middle schools and four high schools. Our goal is to serve all sixty-eight Public Volusia County schools and mentor 6400 or 10% of the children. We interface with J.A., AVID, TRIO and Take Stock in Kids..
